SOLAS VGM
what is the SOLAS VGM?
The Verified Gross Mass (VGM) is the cargo’s weight plus the container’s tare weight carrying this cargo.
SOLAS requires (before vessel loading) the shipper to provide VGM in a “shipping document/declaration,” either as part of the shipping instruction or in a separate communication.
The purpose of the VGM requirement is to obtain an accurate gross weight of containers so that vessel and terminal operators can prepare vessel stowage plans before loading cargo. The requirement will protect the vessel and terminal operators’ people and assets, including shippers’ cargo.
If the shipper cant provides the VGM declaration, the cargo can be weighted in the port. That will cost approximately 25$-125$.
